On a Fence is a temporary installation that transforms an existing fence into a participatory structure for the Lower East Side community in Manhattan. The project was initiated by artist and architectural designer Chat Travieso, and was developed together with Yeju Choi from 2013 to 2014.
On a Fence seeks to invert the function and meaning of a fence from a physical barrier to a place of inclusion that brings people together. Outside of the fence employs an environmental graphics to guide people to the entrance of the pop-up park while seen from a distance, creating an optical illusion that distorts the linear form. The layered colors of the slats create a Moiré effect in which colors and opacity change as viewers move along the piece.
Inside of the fence are a chalkboard wall, a bike rack, a maze, monkey bars, stepped seating, a sand box, a stage with rotating slats, and seating with tables.
On a Fence is part of Paths to Pier 42, a pop-up park in Manhattans East River waterfront organized by Good Old Lower East Side, Hester Street Collaborative, Lower East Side Ecology Center, Lower Manhattan Cultural Council, and Two Bridges Neighborhood Council, in close partnership with the Lower East Side Waterfront Alliance, NY State Senator Daniel Squadron, and the NYC Department of Parks & Recreation. Local residents and community members of all ages participated in the design process and volunteered in the construction of the piece.
